What Is the Perth New BBQ Boat?

If you think a BBQ boat is just a simple round hull with a table and a Weber grill in the middle, I thought exactly the same thing months ago.
I used to believe it was nothing more than taking a public barbie out onto the water—simple, unexciting, and nothing special.
But it turns out it’s nothing like I imagined.
It’s a lot like my experience with Vegemite: I used to hate it when I was young, but after I got pregnant, I couldn’t get enough. My opinion did a complete 180—just like it did with BBQ boats.
So what changed my mind?
It all started with an argument.

James and me fishing

How Our BBQ Boat Journey Began

One afternoon, I was tidying up the deck when James rushed over with more excitement than I’d seen in a long time.
With a huge smile, he said, “Babe, we need three BBQ boats! Simon’s berths are available right now.”
I froze. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing. It wasn’t just the idea itself—it was that we had no idea what we were getting into.
I immediately pushed back: “What BBQ boats? The pontoons already keep us busy enough!”
But James was already set on his vision. He explained that Simon had sold his fishing boats, leaving enough space to expand our business along the Swan River with brand-new BBQ boats.

Our Disagreement & Turning Point

The next two weeks were difficult. We argued constantly about the idea of starting a BBQ boat hire business in Perth.
James was frustrated because I hesitated, and the berth space was only available for a short time—miss it, and we might have waited a year.
I thought it was just another passing idea, but I soon realized he was completely serious.
He told me something that stuck: “You’re not scared of the BBQ boats—you’re scared of the unknown.”
Slowly, I began to listen. We stopped arguing and started planning. James researched everything about BBQ boats, while I imagined what it would be like to have people laughing and relaxing on the water.

Assembling Our First Perth New BBQ Boat

Before I knew it, the day arrived to assemble our very first Perth New BBQ Boat at Mounts Bay.
To my surprise, it was much simpler than I expected: we lined up the two halves, bolted them together, and added the table, seats, and sun parasol.
What really amazed us was the reaction from passersby. Everyone stopped to ask about the round floating boat.
A three-hour job turned into half a day of answering questions. At that moment, I knew: this wasn’t a crazy idea.
James had been right all along.
